The Unrelenting Dream
Have you ever had a dream that just won’t leave you alone? Maybe (like me) it’s writing a book! Or maybe it’s starting a business, switching careers, or trying something brand new. It’s on your mind constantly, and every time you imagine doing it, you can’t help but smile. But then fear barges in—loud, uninvited, and carrying its buddy, doubt.
- “What if I fail?”
- “What if people don’t like it?”
- “What if I embarrass myself?”
- “What if I’m wrong?”
So instead of getting started, you stall. You convince yourself you need more time, more experience, more money, more confidence. Before you know it, years have passed, and your dream is still sitting on the shelf collecting dust.
Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Fear attacks us all—especially when we’re on the verge of something amazing. The question is: will you let fear stop you, or will you push through in faith?
Fear Is a Liar (But It Sure Sounds Convincing)
Fear makes you believe that starting something new will lead to failure. It tells you you’re not good enough, not qualified, or not ready. But has fear ever actually helped you?
Here’s my personal experience: I spent four years writing my first novel, Exactly How It’s 'Posed to Be. Throughout the process, fear and doubt whispered:
- “You’re not a writer.”
- “No one will like this story.”
- “People don’t read books anymore.”
- “You’re wasting your time.”
I finally stepped out in faith and handed my manuscript to a high school sophomore at my church.
The very next day, he reached out saying he had finished all 485 pages in just over 24 hours—and he loved it! That moment proved fear had been lying to me the entire time.
The Bible states: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
Fear isn’t from God. Power is.
If God gave you the idea, the dream, the vision—He’s already equipped you to make it happen!
Moses Dealt with “Imposter Syndrome” Too (And God Still Used Him)
Imposter syndrome is fear making you doubt your own ability.
Moses is a great example. He ran away from Egypt in fear and was living in the wilderness when God told him to return and lead the Israelites to freedom. Naturally, Moses had excuses:
- “Who am I to do this?”
- “What if they don’t believe me?”
- “I’m not a good speaker.”
Sound familiar? Moses sounded just like us when we’re scared to start something new. But God didn’t accept his excuses. Instead, He said: “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” (Exodus 4:12)
When Moses obeyed, God backed him up every step of the way—just like He will for you.
Pushing Past Fear in Faith
So how do you move past fear? Here are four practical steps:
1. Recognize Fear, But Never Bow to It
Fear is real, but you don’t have to let it control you. Instead of waiting to “feel ready,” take action while you still feel afraid.
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.” (Hebrews 13:6)
Your job is to trust God. His job is handling the fear.
2. Take a Step
Fear thrives in overthinking. The best way to shut it down? Get moving!
- Want to write a book? Start with one page.
- Looking for a new career? Update your resume.
- Starting a business? Talk to a successful entrepreneur.
- Feeling called to ministry? Have a conversation with your pastor.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
3. Shift Your Focus from Fear to Purpose
Fear makes you self-conscious:
- “What if I fail?”
- “What will people think of me?”
Purpose makes you outward-focused:
- “Who needs to hear this?”
- “Who can I serve?”
If God put something in your heart, it’s not just for you. Someone else needs it.
“Value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)
4. Speak Life Over Yourself… Out Loud
Your words shape your reality. Stop saying:
❌ “I’m not good enough.”
❌ “I’ll probably fail.”
❌ “I can’t do this.”
Instead, declare what God says:
✅ “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
✅ “God is with me; I will not be afraid.” (Isaiah 41:10)
✅ “Be strong and courageous. God is with me.” (Joshua 1:9)
✅ “The Lord is my stronghold. I will not be afraid.” (Psalm 27:1)
Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. The more truth you speak, the weaker fear becomes.
